CHAPTER EIGHT

“Are you sure about this, Liv?” Nate asked hesitantly.

“We don’t exactly have a choice, do we?” she said, wiping a tear from her cheek.

Nate couldn’t hold back a smile. “It’s just kindergarten, honey. We’re not sending them off to college.”

“How are you handling this so well? You are supposed to be the emotional one in this relationship,” she said angrily.

“I’m crying on the inside,” Nate said, taking her hand.

22 kindergarteners were lined up in two rows, preparing to file into their classroom. Rosalie and Tuck stood next to each other, holding hands. Tuck looked nervous, but Rosalie was chatting happily to the girl behind her in line.

The teacher clapped her hands once and they all marched forward. Nate put his arm around Olivia to hold her in place, just in case she was thinking about staging a coup.

“Today sucks,” Olivia declared once the kids had gone through the door without looking back. “They don’t even need us anymore, Nate. Neither one of them shed a single tear.”

“Did you really want them to meltdown?” he said skeptically. At least five of the kids had thrown giant fits before getting in line and Nate had been relieved when their kids had maturely followed directions.

“No,” Olivia said with an elaborate sigh. “Would a few tears have killed them, though?”

“You are ridiculous and I adore you.” Nate steered her away from the classroom. “If you’re done being a drama queen, we should get to work.”

“I’m not a drama queen,” she grumbled.

Nate chuckled and led her outside. The sun was shining brightly and he slipped his sunglasses into place. “You know, it’s not even 8:00. We could swing home and finish what you started this morning.”

“What I started?” Olivia poked him in the side. “It takes two to tango, Tucker.”

“Is that a yes?” he asked, opening her car door.

“It’s a raincheck. I really want to get to work and start digging into this Trixie angle.” Olivia glanced one last time at the school. “Mike and Ashley will never have closure until they know what happened to Charlie. We have to find a way to give them that.”

Jen and Calvin were already deep into their work when Nate and Olivia arrived at the station. It didn’t take long to get them up to speed on Beatrix Watts. So far, she was the best suspect they had.

“We can pay her a visit at the studio this morning, apply a little pressure,” Calvin said. “Olivia, you’re the expert. Is there any risk that she might hurt the baby if she thinks the police suspect her?”

“There is always some risk when dealing with a delusional perpetrator, but in this case the abductor’s primary driver is their love for the baby. She won’t hurt the baby unless she feels a physical threat that the baby might be taken away.” Olivia added, “As long as the baby isn’t with her when you speak to her about it, Charlie shouldn’t be in danger.”

“That’s good,” Jen said. “It’s been over 72 hours since the abduction.
